Weight FAQ

What is Ozempic®?

Ozempic® is a brand name version of the generic medication, semaglutide. It is the same active ingredient as Wegovy® and Rybelsus®. Ozempic® is FDA-approved for the management of type 2 diabetes and is often prescribed off-label for weight loss if a provider deems it appropriate. Like other weight medications, Ozempic® is most effective in combination with diet and exercise.

How does Ozempic® work?

Ozempic® is a GLP-1 receptor agonist (semaglutide). By mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, it stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin when blood sugar levels are high, helping to prevent glucose spikes while slowing down digestion. By regulating both blood sugar and appetite, GLP-1s may support weight loss.

How do I get a prescription for Ozempic® through Evernow?

To access care on Evernow click Get Care or Get Started. You'll begin by sharing a bit about your health history, symptoms and primary goals, including your interest in Ozempic®. Once you select your membership plan, we'll give you the choice of how to connect with your Evernow provider. We offer insurance-covered video visits and unlimited text messaging. Together, you'll develop a personalized care plan tailored to your needs. Any medications you are prescribed can be sent to your local pharmacy or delivered at-home. Your provider will work with you to obtain any necessary labs or additional medical information related to your care.

Do you accept insurance or FSA/HSA?

At Evernow, you can utilize insurance to help cover some aspects of your care. On video visits, we accept insurance from top U.S. health plans, including United Healthcare, Aetna, Anthem, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Any medications you are prescribed at Evernow may also be covered by any commercial insurance if fulfilled through your local pharmacy. Most expenses are FSA/HSA eligible. If you have any additional questions, our support team may be able to help.

What to expect when taking Ozempic®?

When starting Ozempic®, most patients will begin with a lower dose and gradually increase it over the first few months until a steady dose is reached. This approach helps your body adjust to the medication and any potential side effects. Your healthcare provider will work with you to determine the best dosing schedule for you, based on your individual response and tolerance. Results vary, but in clinical trials individuals lost over 11 pounds on average, when combined with diet and exercise.

What are the side effects of Ozempic®?

Common side effects of Ozempic® include mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and constipation, which often improve over time. Rarely, Ozempic® may cause more serious effects like thyroid tumors, pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain), low blood sugar, and kidney or gallbladder issues. Contact your healthcare provider if you notice any unusual symptoms like a lump in your neck, vision changes, or severe stomach pain.

How do I take Ozempic®?

Ozempic® is a once weekly medication that comes in a prefilled injection pen that contains multiple doses. The pen is designed to help ease administration and minimize discomfort. If prescribed, you (or someone in your household) will select the prescribed dose and administer the injection under the skin of your abdomen, upper thigh or upper arm. While some patients may experience a mild pinprick sensation or slight skin irritation at the injection site, these effects are typically minimal. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions on administration.

What is a GLP-1?

"GLP-1" stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a natural hormone that helps your body regulate blood sugar, appetite and digestion. Synthetic versions of GLP-1s have been developed as medications to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. These medications, known as GLP-1 agonists, work by mimicking the effects of the natural occurring hormone. Examples of GLP-1s include semaglutide and tirzepatide.

How is Evernow dealing with GLP-1 shortages?

At Evernow, we're committed to helping you access the weight loss treatments that suit your needs. We offer compounded versions of GLP-1 medications, which are formulated in FDA-regulated facilities with the same active ingredients as name-brand GLP-1's. This helps to mitigate risk of medication shortages, so you can more confidently pursue your weight loss journey.
