What it is

As part of a menopausal hormone therapy regimen, progesterone is prescribed in order to protect the lining of the uterus from the effects of estrogen. Individuals taking estrogen alone are at risk for uterine lining overgrowth (hyperplasia) or cancer. Taking progesterone significantly decreases that risk in women with a uterus. Women without a uterus do not need to take progesterone as part of their menopausal hormone therapy.

How to use

Progesterone is best absorbed when taken with food, this can also help reduce side effects.  We also recommend taking progesterone at bedtime. It may further reduce any side effects and could help you sleep better. For specific information on usage, consult your provider and reference the packaging insert(s) included with your medication.

FAQs

What is progesterone?

Progesterone is a hormone that naturally exists in the body and is often used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to balance the effects of estrogen and reduce the risk of endometrial hyperplasia while addressing symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and irregular bleeding. It is a required part of HT if you still have a uterus.

How does the progesterone work?

Progesterone used for menopause falls under the class of progestins, synthetic versions of the natural hormone. It works by opposing the effects of estrogen, helping to prevent excessive growth of the uterine lining (endometrial hyperplasia) and regulating the menstrual cycle, which can alleviate symptoms like irregular bleeding and promote hormonal balance during menopause.

How do I know if progesterone for menopause symptoms is right for me?

Progesterone for menopause symptoms is a required part of MHT if you stil have a uterus. To determine if progesterone is appropriate for you in managing symptoms of menopause, consult with your Evernow provider.

What is the typical dosage of oral progesterone?

The typical dosage of progesterone for menopause management varies but is often prescribed as a daily oral dose ranging from 100 to 200 milligrams, although individual needs may differ, and the guidance of a Evernow provider is essential in determining the appropriate dosage.

Which brands of oral progesterone do you prescribe?

Our providers prescribe both branded and generic forms of oral progesterone based on your needs, insurance coverage and preferences. The brands currently offered on Evernow are the Arabindo progesterone tablets, Prometrium progesterone tablets, and Xiromed progesterone tablets. If you have specific preferences or concerns regarding your medications, please raise them with your Evernow provider.

What are possible side effects of progesterone?

Progesterone, like any medication, can cause side effects. Common side effects of progesterone can include breast tenderness, mood changes, bloating, headache, and irregular menstrual bleeding. In some cases, it may also cause dizziness or drowsiness, so it's important to use it under medical guidance and take it in the evening. Progesterone is best absorbed when taken with food, this can also help reduce side effects. Additionally, progesterone can have different side effects depending on the specific formulation and how it is administered (e.g., oral pills, injections).
